The international treaty formally known as the Basel Convention on the Control of Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and their Disposal, which entered into force in 1992. The UK implements the Convention through the Transfrontier Shipment of Waste Regulations, requiring prior notification and consent from receiving and transit countries for international waste movements. Export of waste for disposal is generally prohibited.
