Toxic chemicals that persist in the environment, bioaccumulate in the food chain, and pose risks to human health and ecosystems. Wastes containing POPs above specified limits are automatically classified as hazardous. Common POPs include PCBs, certain flame retardants, and legacy pesticides. POPs waste requires special treatment and cannot go to standard landfill.
