A biological process where microorganisms break down organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas (methane and carbon dioxide) and digestate. AD is used to treat food waste, agricultural waste, and sewage sludge. The biogas can generate electricity or be upgraded to biomethane for grid injection. AD is a recovery operation for organic waste.
